happened. i was sitting in my room, casually minding my own business and talking to emily on the phone, when the fire alarms sounded. now i would have usually ignored these², and i did for a while, but after about 5-10 minutes i began to wonder if i should leave my room. so i wandered around, still on the phone, checking for signs of a fire. none. so i went back to my room. then i noticed the fire engines driving towards the building.
uh oh. i suppose i better get out.
so i'm walking down the stairs, still on the phone to emily, when i realised that i didn't have my camera! so, to emily's surprise and disbelief, i went back up to get it. and i took some photos!
i made this one bigger because it's a better photo. this is the shot out of the window as i sauntered out of the burning building. you can see marcus (in the white), martin (in the black) and holly (in the white with blonde hair), my flatmates, as the bottom-most people on the photo.
so i strolled out of the fire exit and there were lots of people around.
marcus, gav and i wandered over to the car park and they ended up playing football with a bottle they found while i commented on the goings-on to emily. i was a little worried that there would still be people inside, which would make them cooler than me, but a quick trip around the side reassured me. i took a very blurry self portrait:
and sat down in the benches there, where i noticed there were still people in the pub/bar drinking and therefore cooler people than me. oh well.
this is also where we had the barbeque to start off the year, where the burgers and sausages were all burned on the outside, frozen on the inside. yay.
okay. so. we were stood around for ages and then we got bored. so we started playing football in the carpark. it's just opposite where i live, the wall i face out of actually, you can see where i live here:
it's the 4th window in on the top floor, with the slanted roof. hey. so yeah. a big crisis and i was on the phone to emily all the way through it. fun! i think she enjoyed her window into the action. because of her i started calling the fire engines "fire trucks" and then she did too, so i guess i went american and then turned her more american. who knows! that'll teach her to call me when my building is on fire.
well, it turns out that it was only a chip pan fire, but they brought 3 fire engines out when i got stuck in the lift, so i think the firefighters just need the fresh air. anyway, i'm okay. phew. long post. also: it is my birthday tomorrow/today (the 30th) :) wish me a good one!
¹ for a given value of exciting.
² at this point i'd like to mention the time that the building had a fire drill at something like 8 in the morning. i woke up due to the incredibly loud alarms, thought "there's no way i'm getting out of bed, this is a drill i'm sure." and managed to
fall back asleep.
